(The anxiety of being engulfed and the fetishistic scenario)
In: Revue Française de Psychanalyse, Vol. 65, No. 5, 2001, pp. 1625-1639
Language: French
Abstract:  "Freud had highlighted the denial of maternal castration in order to understand the psychic organization of the "perverse" subject. The postfreudians underlined the importance of the anxiety of separation experienced by the child-future perverse subject, who denies the reality of the primitive scene and the procreative power of the father. With the help of the fetish, the child seek omnipotent control of the maternal object that he fears will disappear. By evoking different clinical situations, the inhibition of sexuality or the work of sublimation in the work of the painter Hans Bellmer, this article attempts to show the links that exist between the transitional object and the festishistic object. The constitution of a fetish of of a fetishistic relation to the object refer to the failure of the processes of transitionality." (APA/PsycINFO)

Sexual fetishism: an experimental analogue
In: The Psychological Record, Vol. 16, No. 3, 1966, pp. 293-296
Abstract:  "Conditioned sexual responses to a pair of female boots were established by the following method. A colored photographic slide was repeatedly projected on a screen immediately prior to the presentation of slides of sexually arousing nude women. The criterion of 5 successive sexual responses to the boots was attained by the 3 Ss in 30, 65, and 24 trials, respectively. Extinction and spontaneous recovery were also demonstrated." In: Psychological Record, Vol. 18, No. 1, 1968, pp. 25-27
Abstract:  "5 Ss were conditioned to give sexual response to a photograph of a pair of knee-length boots (cs) and then the response was extinguished by repeated presentation of the cs alone. Another condition (backward conditioning) was included to control for the possibility of pseudoconditioning. None of the Ss reached the criterion in this control condition." (APA/PsycINFO)

Fetishism in a woman
In: Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association, Vol. 37, No. 2, 1989, pp. 465-491
Abstract:  "Presents a clinical illustration of a 22-yr-old woman with a fetishistic perversion (generally considered to occur only in males) and considers it within the context of the classic concept of fetishism originally described by Freud (1927). Similarities and differences between male and female fetishism are discussed, with attention given to the greater complexity of the perversion as it occurs in a woman. The clinical example confirms the existence of fetishism in women and suggests that subtle forms of the perversion may go unnoticed and be more prevalent than previously realized." (APA/PsycINFO)

Abstract:  "An account is given of the available results of behavior therapy in the treatment of sexual disorders. To date attempts have been made to treat impotence, frigidity, voyeurism, exhibitionism, transvestism, fetishism and homosexuality. The results suggest that the methods of behavior therapy can be applied with success in treating sexual disorders. Some additional suggestions are made." (Psyc Abstracts)

Treatment by Revulsion
In: Mental Health, Vol. 26, No. 1, 1967, pp. 24-25
Abstract:  "The application of aversion therapy (Pavlov) in treating sexually deviant behavior is explained. Aversion conditioning can be produced pharmacologically with the use of apomorphine or emetine, which induce nausea, or electrically. The uses of the 2 methods are described and briefly compared. it is noted that in regard to the former, 'the alternative unpleasant response is experienced as occurring within the individual as opposed to the shock, which is obviously inflicted by the contemporaneous act of the therapist, and which may easily be interpreted as purely punitive.' However, the latter method is simpler and less time-consuming." (APA/PsycINFO)

Protocols for the use of cyproterone, medroxyprogesterone, and leuprolide in the treatment of paraphilia
In: Canadian Journal of Psychiatry, Vol. 45, No. 6, 2000, pp. 559-563
Abstract:  "OBJECTIVE: To propose a protocol for minimizing medical complications associated with the use of cyproterone, medroxyprogesterone, and depot leuprolide to treat paraphilia. METHOD: Review of the relevant literature. RESULTS: Certain patient populations should not be treated with these medications, and medical complications associated with each can be detected early and avoided. CONCLUSIONS: For each drug, a series of screening tests prior to use and scheduled testing during use can minimize potential medical complications."

Abstract:  "Determined the presence of concept contents in psychological tests and anamnestic details that indicate a mechanical self-experience in 106 children and adolescents. Ss presented with disturbances in sexual identity, object choice, and sexual behavior. Results for fetishistic Ss, more than results for Ss with violent tendencies, support the hypothesis that a spiritualized technical-mechanical world and human image can play a role in the development of sexual perversions." Abstract:  "The primary emphasis in this book '... is upon the import of the sociocultural environment and unique individual experiences as conditioners of sexually pervertive behavior.' Following a discussion of 'The perversion and the norm,' the author treats homosexuality, transvestism, pyromania, sadomasochism, lust murder, fetishism, pedophilia, necrophilia, exhibitionism and voyeurism. Many case histories are presented, as well as many references to world sexual literature. A critical review of the Kinsey report and a bibliography of books dealing with sex variants supplement the text." (APA/PsycINFO)

Ladies of fashion: pleasure, perversion or paraphilia
In: International Journal of Psychoanalysis, Vol. 77, No. 2, 1996, pp. 337-351
Abstract:  "The author considers the reasons why interest in fashion is important in female development. Freud's comment that 'all women are clothes fetishists' and his explanation that a woman uses clothes to show that 'one can find in her everything that one can expect from women' are amplified and challenged by other authors and psychoanalytic evidence. Caper's (1994) focus on the erotic meaning of his patient's clothing is contrasted with the use ego-psychologists have made of 'appropriate' clothing and grooming as markers of mental health and intact functioning. A case of a woman who had a shopping symptom is considered. The roots of the symptom in her fantasy life, its replacement of genital satisfaction, its precursors in interactions with her parents and its use in enacting sado-masochistic fantasies is elaborated in the case material. A second case briefly illustrates the role ascetic refusal of clothing may play in some women's psychic lives. Use of clothing as a way of displaying the body, as an indicator of economic power, as an incitement to envy, and as a sexual enticement is discussed. Examples of understanding of the psychological aspects of interest in clothing are drawn from art, anthropology, sociology, political science and philosophy. The paper concludes with the idea that clothing and shopping for clothing can range from normal pleasure to paraphilia and leaves open the question whether it can be a perversion. Focusing on clinical material about shopping for fashionable clothing, the author shows how shopping can become central in some women's lives as it is important in many. It considers the boundaries between source of pleasure, paraphilia and sexual fetish as they are exemplified in women's attitudes towards clothing and their use of it."

Female fetishes and female perversions: Hermine Hug-Hellmuth's "A case of female foot or more properly boot fetishism" reconsidered
In: Psychoanalytic Review, Vol. 77, No. 1, 1990, pp. 11-23
Abstract:  "Presents a translation of H. Hug-Hellmuth's (1915) paper reporting the case of a 30-yr-old woman with boot fetishism. Hug-Hellmuth implies several etiological factors for the S's perversion (e.g., identification with her father and a passionate wish to be a boy). The author discusses how the theory of the development of perversions focuses on the phallic element, thereby suggesting that perversions occur mainly in males. Other examples of female perversions are cited, with the suggestion that discussion of female perversions was taboo because they threatened the ideal image of motherhood and maternal purity." Things visible and invisible: The Leather Archives and Museum
In: Journal of Homosexuality, Vol. 43, No. 1, 2002, pp. 1-9
Abstract:  "Discusses reasons underlying the relative absence of research on the leather/levi community in gay and lesbian studies, and the history and special collections of the Leather Archives and Museum (LA & M). At the beginning of the 1970s the leather community of both dominant and submissive individuals had in place a framework of social forms used completely or in part in all US cities where a coherent leather-identified gay community had emerged. However, there is a relative absence of contemporary, primary documentation of this period outside of private records of leather clubs themselves. Oral histories have assumed a greater significance in the leather documentation corpus than is true for mainstream gay and lesbian cultures. From its initial plans in 1992, the LA & M held its 1st public display in 1993, moved to a Chicago storefront location in 1995, and then moved to a permanent location in 1999."

Abstract:  "Discusses the formation of deviations in relation to child development. Perversion formation is seen as a function of neurotic repetition of the inability to love and succeed in a love relationship. Sexual deviants have common family background characteristics such as difficulty in role identification. Psychotherapy is the treatment of choice. Success depends upon the individual's developing the ability to love." (APA/PsycINFO)

Reversible transvestic fetishism in a man with Parkinson's disease treated with selegiline
In: Clinical Neuropharmacology, Vol. 25, No. 4, 2002, pp. 234-237
Abstract:  "Dopaminergic therapy in patients with Parkinson's disease may change the quality as well as the quantity of sexual interest and behavior. This 72-year-old man had a 37-year history of Parkinson's disease treated with a right thalamotomy and was later treated with levodopa for more than 20 years. Selegiline (5 mg twice daily) was added for motor fluctuations. He developed a frequent impulse to wear women's clothing but did not act on this impulse until his wife died over a year later. He then began to dress in women's clothing an average of once per week. He stated he had never thought of cross-dressing previously. The selegiline was stopped, and his urge to wear women's clothing ceased. Paraphilias are a rare behavioral complication of Parkinson's disease treatment. Other paraphilias have been attributed to dopamine agonists, suggesting that the action of the monoamine oxidase inhibitor responsible for the patient's transvestism in this case was dopamine potentiation. Drug-induced paraphilias and hypersexuality may represent a reversal of the putative premorbid Parkinson's disease personality traits of introversion, cautious behavior, and lack of "novelty-seeking." A biologic basis for transvestism, and paraphilias in general, is not known. Rare clues emerge from cases similar to this one."

Masochism and the female sexual role
In: The Journal of Sex Research, Vol. 6, No. 1, 1970, pp. 56-58
Abstract:  "It is felt that masochism is the result of cultural attitudes in combination with changes in sexual and psychological development. Masochism is defined as 'the turning of destructive drives against the self' and refers to the sexual masochist as 'one who cannot enjoy the sexual act unless it is accompanied by pain, humiliation, or submission.' It is asserted that female sexual masochism arises when the child develops rage toward her mother because of inadequate mothering. The child, in turn, is afraid to outwardly express rage for fear of abandonment; and therefore turns rage against herself which, if rewarded with sympathy, persists into adulthood." (APA/PsycINFO)

(Some considerations regarding desire and fetishism based on a psychoanalytic experience)
In: Revista Brasileira de Psicanalise, Vol. 25, No. 1, 1991, pp. 165-174
Language: Portuguese with English abstract
Abstract:  "Discusses the phenomenon of fetishism, quoting Freud's definition of it as a response to the castration threat in men and the disavowal of penis absence in women. As a protection against the danger of castration, the importance of fetishism lies in its reassurance value. Fetishism may symbolize the last moment in which a woman could be thought of as phallic. The question of fetishism may transcend the studies of perversion, raising questions regarding conditions essential for the constitution of desire. This theme is illustrated with the clinical case of a man with a fetish for cows." (APA/PsycINFO)

Preoedipal roots of perversion
In: Psychoanalytic Inquiry, Vol. 7, No. 3, 1987, pp. 415-430
Abstract:  "Asserts that the psychoanalytic study of perversions, particularly that of fetishism, has increasingly implicated preoedipal factors in the constitution of the perversions. Disturbances in early sexual development, which result in significant distortions of core gender identity in the 2nd year of life, are delineated. The implications of the severe preoedipal castration reactions on the subsequent drive organization and their implications for later perverse development are traced. Findings are based on 35 boys and 35 girls who were studied. Case material of 1 child distinguishes the development of the infantile fetish from the transitional object." (APA/PsycINFO)

Sexual Deviation
3rd edition

Abstract:  Examines issues in sexual deviation and sexual behavior. From the preface: "While this [book] refers to the biological, genetic, developmental, unconscious, psychological, social, and legal aspects, the aims of the book are primarily clinical. Many of the various approaches described here apply simultaneously. This must be accepted in order to appreciate what is happening within a particular person with sexual deviation, their interaction with a partner or victim, and their need for care. /// The prevailing attitudes to sexuality in Western society are now more liberal. Sexual behaviour hitherto regarded as intolerably abnormal, is now viewed as passable, provided it does not offend publicly or harm others."

Pharmacotherapy of Paraphilias in the Next Millennium
In: Behavioral Sciences and the Law, Vol. 18, No. 1, 2000, pp. 43-56
Abstract:  "Paraphilias are psychiatric disorders of abnormal sexual behavior whose prevalence has markedly increased during the last decade. Treatment modalities currently used fall into three categories: surgical castration, psychotherapy, and pharmacotherapy. The pharmacological interventions consist of antiandrogens that either completely reduce testosterone secretion and/or antagonize the action of testosterone at the level of the receptor, and psychotropic drugs, namely antidepressants. Cyproterone and medroxyprogesterone acetates are the two antiandrogens more commonly used. They are only effective in relatively high doses, but have a substantial number of severe side effects which has considerably limited their use. Psychotropic drugs may be effective solely in men with a definite obsessive-compulsive disorder component. Because of the erratic results and lack of permanent eradication of the paraphilic manifestations their use in paraphilias is highly controversial. Long-acting gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonist analogues are the most potent antiandrogens, and selectively abolish testosterone secretion in a totally reversible fashion. They are administered parenterally once every 1 to 3 months, and have the fewest side effects. Long-acting GnRH analogues, together with psychotherapy, are highly effective in controlling selected paraphilias (pedophilia, exhibitionism, and voyeurism), and are the most promising mode of therapy in the next millennium. There is an urgent need for good methodological research; carefully designed double-blind controlled studies with a large number of subjects in order to validate or not the use of the various pharmacotherapies."

Sex Radical Communities and the Future of Sexual Ethics
In: Journal of Lesbian Studies, Vol. 3, No. 3, 1999, pp. 133-142
Abstract:  "Many urban-based gay male, lesbian, and mixed-gender sexually radical communities (such as leather an/or S/M groups) portray their interests in sexuality in terms of arousal and pleasure. The writings of many gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and queers involved in such communities suggest that sexual pleasure is based on individual preference, and that all sexual activities need only the consent of participating individuals to render those activities moral and good. Thus, as long as people consent, a wide variety of practices can be authorized in this system, such as non-monogamy, group sex, anonymous sex, domination, etc. In this paper, I will suggest that something much more radical is happening in these communities, that "individual preference" and "consent"- although present - are perhaps not the most interesting way to describe what is happening here. Rather, I will explore the possibility that these sex groups are in the process of providing for use a new kind of ethic based not on individuality, but rather based on community."

Conflicts and contradictions among feminists over issues of pornography and sexual freedom
In: Women's Studies International Forum, Vol. 10, No. 2, 1987, pp. 103-112
Abstract:  "The intense debate over the sexual politics of pleasure and of violence against women continues to be played out in the women's movement, particularly over the issue of pornography and sexual sadomasochism. In general the arguments have clustered around two positions: one emphasizing women's sexual colonization and victimization, and the other emphasizing women's sexual repression and passivity. By juxtaposing the arguments in this essay, the author suggests that both sides tend to categorize each other essentially as either virgins or whores. This dichotomous thinking has served to increase the polarization on these issues."
