In: Revue Française de Psychanalyse, Vol. 63, No. 1, 1999, pp. 27-41
Language: French
Abstract:  "Notes that nowhere are affects more perverted than in sexual perversions. This is especially obvious when one considers the affect insofar as it represents the different poles of the instinctual circuit. Perverted practices represent a privileged area for understanding affective processes in general and their principal modalities. Bonnet subsequently explains why and how it is possible to speak of the 4 elements which organize the instinctual circuit, i.e., thrust, source, object and aims. The author discusses the affects involved in different sexual perversions: affect/aim associated with exhibitionism; affect/object associated with pedophilia and fetishism; affect/thrust corresponding to voyeurism; affect/source, associated with overcathexis of the anal zone. Perversions, however, can also be sublimated into artistic manifestations, e.g., in the visual arts and music. Some clinical material illustrates in part the author's thesis." (APA/PsycINFO)

A cena perversa
(The perverse scene)
In: Revista Brasileira de Psicanalise, Vol. 33, No. 1, 1999, pp. 177-187
Language: Portuguese
Abstract:  "Formulates, based on a TV documentary on the subject of paraphilias, a metapsychological and clinical reflection on the perverse personality. Quoting Freud's words that define neurosis as the negative of perversion, the author draws a parallel between what he calls 'the dream scene' and 'the perverse scene.' Freud's case of the Wolf Man (1910-1914), and the dream central to it, are used as paradigm for the dream scene. As paradigm for the perverse scene, the author uses the case of Freud's patient in 'Fetishism' (1927), developing his thesis that one of the basic components of perversion is the denial of mortality. An intriguing clinical case from the author's practice, in which new aspects of perversion appear, illustrates the theme of this essay." (APA/PsycINFO)

Hemingway's fetishism: Psychoanalysis and the mirror of manhood.
Publisher: New York University Press, New York
Notes:  XV, 366 pp.
Abstract:  From the cover: "In Hemingway's Fetishism, the author demonstrates in detail and with new archival evidence how fetishism was crucial to the construction and negotiation of identity and gender in both Hemingway's life and his fiction. Critics have long acknowledged Hemingway's lifelong erotic obsession with hair, but this book is the first to explain in a coherent manner why Hemingway was a fetishist and why the public should care. Without reducing Hemingway's art to his psychosexuality, the author demonstrates that when the fetish appears in Hemingway's fiction, it always does so with a retinue of attendant fantasies, themes, and symbols that are among the most prominent and important in Hemingway's work."

Gender Role Reversal and the Violated Lesbian Body: Toward a Feminist Hermeneutic of Lesbian Sadomasochism
In: Journal of Lesbian Studies, Vol. 3, No. 3, 1999, pp. 61-72
Abstract:  "The lesbian sadomasochist exists in the feminist community as doubly other. If she is addressed at all in feminist discourses, she is often accused of wielding the weapons of patriarchy (violence, danger, fear) against all that feminism is. In what follows I will construct a theoretical framework which suggests that lesbian sadomasochism is not antithetical to feminism. In fact, lesbian sadomasochism is, on numerous levels, a response to those things deemed damaging to women."

Psychopathia Sexualis - A Clinical-Forensic Study
Publisher: Bloat Books, Burbank
Abstract:  "Translated from the 12th and final German edition in 1906, a reissue of the 1886 pioneering study in sexology, presenting 238 case histories detailing a wide range of sexual perversion. Also includes an appendix of additional, previously excised case histories; an essay by Krafft-Ebing (1840-1902) on homicidal menstrual psychosis; and an introduction by King."
"This new edition is based on earlier American editions of Psychopathia sexualis: the translation of the seventh German edition by Charles Gilbert Chaddock published in 1893 and that of the twelfth German edition by F.J. Rebman, which appeared in 1906. These two editions contain many flaws. King states in his introduction that he and his associate editor have checked, corrected, and revised the older translations. Yet after checking King's edition against the original German texts, it turns out that, unfortunately, many passages are still inaccurate or incomplete, and sometimes even incorrect." Sex Radical Communities and the Future of Sexual Ethics
In: Journal of Lesbian Studies, Vol. 3, No. 3, 1999, pp. 133-142
Abstract:  "Many urban-based gay male, lesbian, and mixed-gender sexually radical communities (such as leather an/or S/M groups) portray their interests in sexuality in terms of arousal and pleasure. The writings of many gays, lesbians, bisexuals, and queers involved in such communities suggest that sexual pleasure is based on individual preference, and that all sexual activities need only the consent of participating individuals to render those activities moral and good. Thus, as long as people consent, a wide variety of practices can be authorized in this system, such as non-monogamy, group sex, anonymous sex, domination, etc. In this paper, I will suggest that something much more radical is happening in these communities, that "individual preference" and "consent"- although present - are perhaps not the most interesting way to describe what is happening here. Rather, I will explore the possibility that these sex groups are in the process of providing for use a new kind of ethic based not on individuality, but rather based on community."

Sexual Behaviour and Social Adaptation Among Sadomasochistically-Oriented Males
In: Journal of Sex Research, Vol. 36, No. 3, 1999, pp. 273-282
Abstract:  The present study explored the sexual behavior and social adaptation of a sample of male sadomasochists. A total of 164 men who were members of two sadomasochistically-oriented clubs participated in the study. The numbers of heterosexual male and gay male participants were about equal. A semi-structured questionnaire containing items related to social, sexual, and psychological aspects of the participants' lives was used. The results showed that the participants were socially well-adjusted and that sadomasochistic behavior was mainly a facilitative aspect of their sexual lives, most participants being flexible in both sexual activities and sadomasochistic role-taking. Sadists were more likely to be younger and more sexually active than masochists.

Human sexuality and its diagnosis
In: Scandinavian Journal of Sexology, Vol. 2, No. 4, 1999, pp. 203-206
Abstract:  "Focuses on the contradictory development of research and literary trends on a group of paraphilias during the last decade. One trend is that of scientests and other health professionals who have placed the group of paraphilias in a spectrum of obsessive-compulsive-related disorders and treat them with serotonergic drugs. The other trend is the rise of queer politics, which seeks to include other sexual practices that deviate from present conventional or normalized gender, sexual, and intimate norms. Some of the subcategorizes of paraphilias are included in this normalization process, including consensual adult practices like sadism/masochism, multiple partner sex, or nonmarital, noncohabitating forms of "family." The author discusses paraphilias in the context of Mental Disorders-IV (DSM-IV), the contradictory development in the study of paraphilias, and the lack of communication between the two groups. The author argues that scientific ignorance has led to the pathologization of other healthy groups of people, like individuals practicing fetishism or transvestite fetishism. Queer politics, however, wants to include sexual practices that deviate from present norms; in essence, this politics focuses on sexual health and normality which may have an influence on general health." 'Without Contraries Is No Progression': S/M, Binary Thinking, and the Lesbian Purity Test
In: Journal of Lesbian Studies, Vol. 3, No. 3, 1999, pp. 45-59
Abstract:  "Some lesbians subject other queer women to a type of purity test, stereotyping bisexuals, transsexuals and leatherwomen as threats to the lesbian and feminist movements. Such attitudes frequently reveal rigid, binary, either-or-thinking and an intolerance of difference. This essay, by contrast, argues in favor of an embrace of diversity within the queer women's community and examines the way bisexuals, transsexuals, and leatherwomen exhibit a resistance to binary thinking and a 'tolerance of ambiguity.'"

Sexual imagery of physically disabled women: Erotic? Perverse? Sexist?
In: Sexuality and Disability, Vol. 17, No. 3, 1999, pp. 277-282
Abstract:  "Focused on still photographs of physically disabled women who have involved themselves in erotica and pornography as sex workers, entrepreneurs, and relationship seekers. Alcohol's possible covert role: brain dysfunction, paraphilias, and sexually aggressive behaviors.
In: Sex Abuse, Vol. 11, No. 2, 1999, pp. 147-158
Abstract:  "A number of studies have suggested a relationship between sexually anomalous behavior and brain dysfunction. However, in most cases, the etiology of this dysfunction remains elusive. In this paper, alcohol exposure in utero (fetal alcohol syndrome) is offered as one possible explanation for the neurophysiological abnormalities that appear to characterize a notable proportion of individuals within the paraphilic and sexually aggressive populations. It is noteworthy that the teratogenic effects of alcohol upon humans and animals often leads to a number of the behavioral and physiological abnormalities exhibited by some of these individuals."
