The Development of Sadomasochism as a Cultural Style in the Twentieth-Century United States
School: Indiana University
URL: www.americanfetish.net
Abstract:  "Today, distinctively stylized representations of fetishistic and sadomasochistic sexuality are commonplace in popular culture and fashion. This dissertation analyzes the historical development of modern fetishistic sadomasochism (SM) as a cultural style, and examines how this style was introduced into popular culture. Drawing from a rich array of archival and primary source material, this analysis locates the origin of modern SM and fetishistic styles in early twentieth-century practitioner networks in Europe, Australia, and the United States. Modern SM styles are distinguished from their nineteenth-century antecedents, and three distinct, modern SM styles are specified: European Fetish (c. 1928), American Fetish (c. 1934), and Gay Leather (c. 1950). These styles originated in distinct social groups and exhibit differences in aesthetics and composition. Together, these three early-modern styles established a body of stylistic precedents from which subsequent SM and fetish styles evolved, both in sexual subcultures and in late twentieth-century popular culture. The focus of the dissertation is on the development of the American Fetish and Gay Leather styles in the United States from 1933-1971. The general explanatory approach used in the dissertation is the production-of-culture framework in the sociology of culture. This approach has previously been used in historical explanations of the development of styles in art. It is used here to explain the development of style associated with a category of sexuality. Variations in the aesthetics and conventions of SM styles are explained in terms of processes such as the historical development of practitioner networks and social circles, the economics of the production and distribution of SM and fetishistic erotica, and the political, legal, technological, and institutional contexts in which fetishistic materials have been produced, consumed, and constrained by agendas of social control."

An approach to the treatment of paraphilias
in: Sanavio, E. (ed.): Behavior and cognitive therapy today: Essays in honor of Hans J. Eysenck, pp. 49-66
Publisher: Elsevier Science Ltd., Oxford
Abstract:  From the chapter: "In practice, the presentation of paraphilias along with sexual dysfunctions is relatively uncommon in clinics. However, these cases, when they present, represent a small but significant subgroup, and a systematic approach is needed in their management. It is hoped that the approach suggested in this chapter will provide a framework for dealing with this special category. (...) When the dysfunction is related to the need to rely on a fetish object or other paraphiliac elements, the therapist has two options to consider. The first is to attempt to eliminate the paraphilia. The other is to consider incorporating the paraphilia into the couple's sexual relationship in a limited and controlled way. In those cases where incorporation is not an option, therapy should aim at elimination, or control, of the paraphilia."

Sexual fetishism associated with temporal lobe dysrhythmia and learning disability: Two case studies
In: British Journal of Learning Disabilities, Vol. 26, No. 3, 1998, pp. 110-114
Abstract:  "Several reports stress the occurrence of fetishism in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy or dysfunction. Fetishism in association with EEG evidence of temporal lobe(s) dysfunction in 2 males (29 yr old and 20 yr old) with learning disability are discussed. Before treatment with carbamazepine, the EEG showed abnormalities of epileptic nature although overt seizures were absent. Both Ss improved with carbamazepine treatment. The authors conclude that an anticonvulsant medication, such as carbamazepine, may therefore be beneficial for some patients whose fetishism is associated with EEG evidence of epileptic activity involving the temporal lobes."

Preferential rape in the theory of courtship disorder
In: Archives of Sexual Behavior, Vol. 27, No. 5, 1998, pp. 433-443
Abstract:  "The theory of courtship disorder suggests voyeurism, exhibitionism, frotteurism, and preferential rape (a paraphilic preference for coercive sex) are expressions of a common underlying disturbance. Previous research has demonstrated that voyeurism, exhibitionism, and frotteurism are relatively likely to co-occur; however, their associations with rape are weaker. One explanation is that rapists are more heterogeneous and may not always be motivated by a paraphilic interest in coercive sex. Paraphilic interests can be identified using phallometric testing, but the sensitivity of the test is attenuated by voluntary control over erectile responding. Another approach is to look for a behavioral marker associated with paraphilic rape-proneness. Freund (1990) has argued that exhibitionism may be the "hub" of courtship disorder because exposing one's genitals to a stranger is rare in control subjects. We predicted that rapists who also engaged in exhibitionistic activity would be more likely than other rapists to also engage in other expressions of courtship disorder, i.e., voyeurism and frotteurism. To rule out the possibility that rapists who report exhibitionistic activity only differ in their willingness to report anomalous sexual behavior, we also predicted no difference between the groups in their self-reported involvement in other paraphilic activities such as sadism or masochism, or paraphilic target preferences such as fetishism or transvestism. Finally, we predicted no difference between groups in their willingness to admit to attempting or committing rape. The results supported our predictions, and lend credence to the notion of preferential rape as an expression of courtship disorder. Moreover, these results suggest that the presence of another paraphilia, particularly exhibitionism, may be useful as a behavioral marker for paraphilic rape-proneness."

Lay Theories of Etiology and "Cure" for Four Types of Paraphilia: Fetishism; Pedophilia; Sexual Sadism; and Voyeurism
In: Journal of Clinical Psychology, Vol. 54, No. 5, 1998, pp. 689-700
Abstract:  "The current study set out to investigate the structure, determinants, and relationship between lay theories of the etiology and efficacy of "cures" for four types of paraphilia: fetishism, pedophilia, sexual sadism, and voyeurism. One hundred and five participants completed a four-part questionnaire, which was divided into (a) demographic details, (b) perceptions of the etiology, (c) ratings of cure for each paraphilia, and (d) the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire. Previous studies of lay theories have demonstrated a clear and interpretable factor structure similar to that of explicit academic theories, as well as a clear and logical relationship between perceived etiology and cure. A similar structure was expected to emerge in this study, together with positive correlations between the various factors and personality type. A factor analysis revealed a clear and logical factor structure for etiology and cure items. Further, etiology and cure factors correlated strongly with each other but only moderately with demographic details and personality differences. These findings are discussed in relation to growing literature in the field."

Sexualization of the female foot as a response to sexually transmitted epidemics: a preliminary study
In: Psychological Reports, Vol. 83, No. 2, 1998, pp. 491-498
Abstract:  "The authors reviewed historical literature and hypothesized a relationship between epidemics of sexually transmitted diseases and foot fetishism. They tested this hypothesis by quantifying foot-fetish depictions in the mass-circulation pornographic literature during a 30-yr. interval. An exponential increase was noted during the period of the current AIDS epidemic. The authors offer reasons for this possible relationship." (APA/PsycINFO)

Propane-Associated Autoerotic Fatalities
In: The American Journal of Forensic Medicine and Pathology, Vol. 19, No. 4, 1998, pp. 381-386
Abstract:  "We describe 3 unusual autoerotic fatalities in which propane gas was used to induce hypoxia. To our knowledge, these are the first cases of their kind to be reported and described in depth, although brief references to similar cases have appeared. The case histories of 3 white males, aged 22, 42 and 62 years, are described with emphasis on the scene and circumstances and the identification of propane from autopsy materials. In one case, unusual paraphilia and multiple foreign bodies in the rectum were noted. These 3 cases illustrate an unusual form of autoerotic practice in which hypoxia is induced by propane inhalation, unlike the usual neck compression that has been previously described in depth. The importance of scene reconstruction and an awareness of this phenomenon is stressed."

Abstract:  "An organized semi-public event for the exhibition of S/M (sadomasochistic) behavior is known as a 'party' by the participants. Using a retrospective analysis of the author's experiences over the last 25 years, a description of these parties is presented. The present paper explores the structure, function, and purpose of these parties. The S/M behavior, sexual interactions, rules of etiquette, and structure of the party are summarized. The lack of genitally focused orgasm-seeking behavior at the party is discussed at length."

A cat as fetish: A contribution to the theory of fetishism
In: International Journal of Psycho-Analysis, Vol. 79, No. 4, 1998, pp. 713-725
Abstract:  "Since Freud's original study of fetishism and his description of the genesis of the symptom, many additions and elaborations have been made to those propositions. In the past decade, fetishism has been increasingly applied to a wide variety of behaviour and mentation, some with no overt sexual component. In this paper, the author, drawing on his observations made during a very lengthy analysis of a female patient, underscores the need to broaden the applicability of the diagnosis of fetishism but sees value in limiting it to the sexual situation. He suggests that a fetish does not need to be an inanimate object and expresses agreement with those who feel that fetishism is not limited to males. Additionally, he offers for consideration the idea that fetishism belongs on a continuum with a whole gamut of phenomena such as the need for a transitional object, the use of amulets, and the endowment of magical properties to words, ideas, rituals and objects. All these phenomena have in common the use of an outside object bestowed by magic and illusion to control anxiety. The hierarchical level of such anxiety and its ideational content (oedipal versus pre-oedipal) are of less causative value than the ego's inability to master it without resorting to an outside object." Abstract:  From the cover: "Masochism has typically been defined as a 'sexual perversion' and lumped together with such harmful nonconsensual practices as pedophilia and bestiality. But in this subversive work, Anita Phillips turns the tables and intelligently rescues masochism from these assumptions and the clinical discourses that have dismissed it as a sickness. In examining these issues, she asks: Is the masochist really a victim or a clever manipulator? What if the masochist really likes himself well enough to undergo being despised? In posing such provocative questions, Phillips challenges many tenets of feminism and psychoanalysis and introduces controversial ideas about perversion and perversity that challenge the legacy of traditional sexology."

Treatment of an unusual case of masochism
In: Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy, Vol. 24, No. 4, 1998, pp. 303-307
Abstract:  "Masochistic sexual activity is potentially dangerous, rarely reported voluntarily, and hard to treat. This article describes a masochist patient who received sexual gratification from being burnt or crushed. Antiandrogen medication, serotonin uptake inhibitor, and psychodynamic psychotherapy along with sexual education and social-skills training and aversive behavior therapy were all tried over a period of 9 months. The response was measured by effects of treatments on the frequency of erotic fantasies and masturbation. Antiandrogens and aversive behavior therapies may be the most effective treatments for such cases, at least in the short term, although the underlying social deficits and the need to reshape the sexual behavior ought to be addressed in the long term."

Force in Women's Sexual Fantasies
In: Archives of Sexual Behavior, Vol. 27, No. 4, 1998, pp. 403-414
Abstract:  "Attitudinal and experiential correlates of sexual fantasies involving force or coercion against the fantasizer were studied in 137 college women. Results revealed that (i) virtually every woman reported engaging in sexual fantasy on a regular basis, (ii) more than half the subjects reported having engaged in a force fantasy, (iii) those reporting force fantasies scored as less sexually guilty and more erotophilic than those not reporting such fantasies. Those reporting force fantasies also had more sexual experience and engaged in more fantasizing of the nonforce type than the other subjects. A history of exposure to sexual force or coercion was unrelated to the report of force fantasies. Taken together, these findings are offered in support of the hypothesis that the occurrence of force fantasies, rather than resulting from an attempt to deal with sexual guilt, represents one of a number of ways in which some women demonstrate a relatively open, unrestricted, and varied approach to their sexuality."

Lay beliefs about overcoming four sexual paraphilias: Fetishism, paedophilia, sexual sadism and voyeurism
In: Personality and Individual Differences, Vol. 24, No. 2, 1998, pp. 267-278
Abstract:  "Investigated lay people's beliefs about the importance of 24 contributors to overcoming 4 paraphilias: fetishism, paedophilia, sexual sadism, and voyeurism. 100 participants (aged 17-35 yrs) were asked to complete an 8-page questionnaire that involved rating the importance of each of the contributors in overcoming each of the 4 problems in turn, as well as personality and sexual attitudes measures. Factor analysis (with varimax rotation) of the coping strategies were performed, revealing 3 factors labelled 'self-reliance,' 'seeking help,' and 'external control.' A number of multiple regression analyses indicated that various demographic details predicted beliefs about the importance of each of the 3 curative factors. Trait measures and attitudes to sex were weakly related to curative beliefs. Self-reliance/will-power was seen as the most important factor in overcoming these paraphilias."

Bondage fantasies and beating fantasies
In: Psychoanalytic Quarterly, Vol. 67, No. 4, 1998, pp. 626-644
Abstract:  "Two male patients had masochistic sexual fantasies: one had bondage fantasies, the other beating fantasies. Each patient had been traumatized in childhood by his experiences with a martyr mother. Each had developed the belief that in an intimate sexual relationship with a woman he would hurt her. As a consequence, each tended to suppress his sexuality. Each used masochistic fantasies to reassure himself that he was not hurting his fantasied or real partner. The reassurance made it safe to experience his sexual feelings. The two patients' use of their masochistic fantasies is compared to the fetishist's use of his fetish, as described by Freud."
